Penetration-grade bitumen and asphalt cement ship in big bags of 1000 to 1300 kg, or in drums. The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container. Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. customs territory. Shipments clear standard U.S. Customs and Border Protection entry on arrival.

Melting

How do you melt bitumen from big bags?

You melt bitumen by heating the whole bag in a melting unit. Handling starts before the bag reaches the melter.

  • A big bag holds 1000 to 1300 kg and is lifted by its four lifting loops.
  • A forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader handles it on site.
  • Bags are lifted level, one at a time.

Bags are charged whole, so nobody cuts, breaks or shovels solid binder. Heat is applied indirectly, through hot oil coils or diesel burners, protecting the binder from scorching at the wall. The melted binder is drawn off to the distributor or the plant.

Pro-Road’s ASMELT bitumen melter and decanter is built for this. The 20-foot unit melts up to 8 cubic meters an hour. The 40-foot unit melts up to 10 cubic meters an hour. A built-in crane lifts and feeds the bags, and a receiving platform inside the unit takes the load. If you already run a melting unit, the big-bag format loads straight into it.

Applications

Which penetration grade suits Puerto Rico’s climate?

Puerto Rico’s tropical climate calls for a harder grade under heavy traffic, such as PEN 40/50 or PEN 60/70. Puerto Rico’s road authority is the Autoridad de Carreteras y Transportación, known as ACT. ACT operates under the Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas, known as DTOP. ACT’s Specification 401 calls for an asphalt performance-graded binder such as PG 64-22, PG 70-16 or PG 70-22.

Pro-Road also supplies PG-graded and polymer-modified binder, including PG 64-22. Your quote confirms grade availability against your project specification.

BEING FINALISED FOR PUBLICATIONSite photography for the Puerto Rico page.

ACT is reconstructing the PR-52 corridor between San Juan and Caguas, with $22 million in combined federal and state funds. Puerto Rico has no active asphalt refinery, so all penetration-grade bitumen and asphalt cement is imported.

FAQ

What do buyers ask most about bitumen supply to Puerto Rico?

Buyers most often ask about big-bag handling, melting, order size and documentation.

How are big bags lifted and handled on site?

Big bags are lifted by their four lifting loops, holding 1000 to 1300 kg each. A forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader can handle the load. Bags are lifted level, one at a time.

Can big bags be stored outdoors, and for how long?

Big bags are stored on level, drained ground, kept off the surface on pallets or dunnage. They are covered against prolonged sun and rain. Solid bitumen remains stable in storage, so the bag fabric is the main thing to protect.

How do we melt the bitumen?

Bitumen is melted by heating the whole big bag in a melting unit. Heat is applied indirectly, protecting the binder from scorching at the wall. No cutting or shovelling is needed.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.

Which penetration grade suits Puerto Rico’s climate?

Puerto Rico’s tropical climate favors a harder grade under heavy traffic, such as PEN 40/50 or PEN 60/70. Your quote confirms the grade against your project specification.

What documentation ships with the container?

Each shipment ships with the technical datasheet for the grade supplied. It also carries the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading. Datasheets for every grade are on our datasheets page.

How long does delivery to Puerto Rico take?

Sea transit takes 5 days to San Juan, with container sailings. Your quote confirms the schedule and door-to-site timing.

Can we appoint our own inspector?

Do you supply cold mix asphalt?

Yes. Pro-Road produces cold mix for patching and road maintenance. Supply is in container volumes for contractors and municipalities. State your volume and destination port in your request.
