Bitumen Supplier in the Eastern Caribbean: Grades, Specs and Delivery

Pro-Road Global supplies penetration-grade bitumen to five markets in the Eastern Caribbean: Grenada, Saint Lucia, Dominica, Sint Maarten and Martinique.

Pro-Road makes PEN 40/50, 60/70, 85/100 and 120/150 bitumen in its own plants. Each grade ships in big bags with its technical datasheet. Below you will find the grade table and delivery details for each discharge port. You will also find the documentation Eastern Caribbean projects ask for.

Product range

Which penetration grades are available in the Eastern Caribbean?

The grades available are PEN 40/50, 60/70, 85/100 and 120/150, made in Pro-Road’s own plants. Harder grades suit hot climates and heavy traffic. Softer grades suit cooler or high-altitude areas. Grade codes with a link open that grade’s datasheet.

GradeTypeTypical use
PEN 40/50Penetration-grade bitumen, hardHot-mix asphalt in hot climates and heavy traffic
PEN 60/70Penetration-grade bitumen, mediumGeneral hot-mix paving, the most widely used grade
PEN 85/100Penetration-grade bitumen, softHot mix in cooler or high-altitude areas
PEN 120/150Penetration-grade bitumen, softestCold regions and surface treatment binder

Delivery

How does delivery to the Eastern Caribbean work?

Delivery works by container shipment to Grenada, Saint Lucia, Dominica, Sint Maarten and Martinique. Sea transit takes 4 days to St. George’s and 5 days to Vieux Fort, Roseau and Fort-de-France. Philipsburg takes 6 days.

Your quote confirms the schedule for your destination port. Penetration-grade bitumen and asphalt cement ship in big bags of 1000 to 1300 kg, or in drums.

The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.

Melting

How do you melt bitumen from big bags?

You melt bitumen by heating the whole bag in a melting unit.

Handling follows the same steps for every shipment:

  • A big bag holds 1000 to 1300 kg and is lifted by its four lifting loops.
  • A forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader handles it. The site needs lifting capacity for a bag of up to 1.3 tonnes.
  • Bags are lifted level, one at a time.
  • No special decanting equipment is needed to move a bag from the container to the melter.

Bags are charged whole, so nobody cuts, breaks or shovels the solid binder. Heat is applied indirectly to protect the binder from local overheating at the wall. Controlled heating keeps the binder in good condition throughout melting. The melted binder is drawn off to the distributor or the plant.

The ASMELT bitumen melter and decanter does this work. It has a heating chamber, indirect heat and a pump feeding the plant. If you already run a melting unit, the big-bag format loads straight into it.

Grenada

How does Pro-Road supply bitumen to Grenada?

Pro-Road supplies Grenada by shipping containers to the Port of St. George’s. Sea transit takes 4 days.

Road work falls under Grenada’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Public Utilities, Civil Aviation and Transportation.

Saint Lucia

How does Pro-Road supply bitumen to Saint Lucia?

Pro-Road supplies Saint Lucia by shipping containers to the Port of Vieux Fort. Sea transit takes 5 days.

Road work falls under the Ministry of Infrastructure, Ports Services and Energy. Saint Lucia’s Infrastructure 2030 Agenda, announced in February 2025, sets out road and port upgrades island-wide. Mount Gimie, the island’s highest peak, reaches 950 meters over volcanic, rainforest terrain.

Dominica

How does Pro-Road supply bitumen to Dominica?

Pro-Road supplies Dominica by shipping containers to the Port of Roseau. Sea transit takes 5 days.

Road work falls under the Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and Digital Economy. The DVRP East Coast Road Rehabilitation Project is repaving 30 kilometers of road in two sections. The revised budget is near XCD 234 million. Morne Diablotins, the highest peak in the Eastern Caribbean chain, reaches 1,447 meters over steep, rain-heavy terrain.

Sint Maarten

How does Pro-Road supply bitumen to Sint Maarten?

Pro-Road supplies Sint Maarten by shipping containers to the Port of Philipsburg. Sea transit takes 6 days.

Road work falls under the Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure, known as VROMI. VROMI is running an island-wide road repair programme and rehabilitating the Ring Road. Sint Maarten’s terrain is lower and drier than its neighbors, with a maximum elevation of 383 meters.

Martinique

How does Pro-Road supply bitumen to Martinique?

Pro-Road supplies Martinique by shipping containers to the Port of Fort-de-France. The port is operated by the Grand Port Maritime de la Martinique. Sea transit takes 5 days.

Road network management sits with the Collectivité Territoriale de Martinique. Current projects include the Mangot-Vulcin roundabout redesign and the Union to Bois Rouge road link. Martinique is a French overseas department. France’s NF EN 12591 standard for paving-grade bitumen names grades such as 35/50 and 50/70. Pro-Road does not publish spec values for those grade codes. Pro-Road’s own PEN grades ship with a technical datasheet for each.

Applications

Which penetration grade fits the Eastern Caribbean’s climate?

Hotter climates and heavy traffic call for a harder grade, such as PEN 40/50 or PEN 60/70. Cooler or high-altitude areas call for a softer grade, such as PEN 85/100 or PEN 120/150. Your quote confirms the grade against your project specification.

Big bags are stored on level, drained ground, kept off the surface on pallets or dunnage. They are covered against prolonged sun and rain. Solid bitumen stays stable in storage and does not separate. Protecting the bag fabric matters most over time.
