Penetration-grade bitumen and asphalt cement ship in big bags of 1000 to 1300 kg, or in drums. The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.

Melting

How do you melt bitumen from big bags?

You melt bitumen by heating the whole bag in a melting unit. Bags are charged whole, so nobody cuts, breaks or shovels solid binder by hand. Heat is applied indirectly, protecting the binder at the wall of the unit from scorching. Local overheating damages a binder, and controlled, indirect heating avoids it.

Big bags are handled with standard site equipment:

  • Holds 1000 to 1300 kg and is lifted by its four lifting loops
  • Handled by a forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader. The site needs lifting capacity for a bag of up to 1.3 tonnes
  • Lifted level, one at a time
  • No special decanting equipment is needed to move a bag from the container to the melter

Pro-Road’s ASMELT bitumen melter and decanter is built for this process. Bags load onto a receiving platform inside the unit and are lifted by crane. Internal coils heat the bag indirectly. Once melted, the binder is drawn off to a distributor truck or straight into the mixing plant. If you already run a melting unit, the big-bag format loads straight into it.

Applications

Which grade suits Barbados’s paving conditions?

PEN 60/70 leads for general hot-mix paving under Barbados’s tropical heat and steady traffic. PEN 85/100 and PEN 120/150 suit lower-traffic roads, patching and surface treatment work. Your quote confirms the selection against your project specification:

  • PEN 60/70 suits general hot-mix paving on Barbados’s main road network
  • PEN 85/100 and PEN 120/150 suit lower-traffic roads, patching work and surface treatment binder

Big bags are stored on level, drained ground, kept off the surface on pallets or dunnage. They are covered against prolonged sun and rain. Solid bitumen resists separation and stays stable in storage. The bag fabric needs protection from prolonged sun and rain.

Barbados’s Ministry of Transport and Works governs road specifications and maintenance nationwide. Its Accelerated Mill and Pave Programme has repaved more than 75 roads. A seven-year, BDS $100 million CAF programme is rehabilitating roads island-wide. The Scotland District Road Rehabilitation Programme adds BDS $230 million in road works. Pro-Road’s import supply through Bridgetown Port is an additional sourcing option. It serves contractors and public-works buyers in Barbados.
