Product range

Which bitumen grades are available in the Bahamas?

The grades available are PEN 60/70, PEN 85/100 and PEN 120/150 penetration-grade bitumen. Grade codes that link through open that grade’s datasheet.

GradeTypeTypical use
PEN 60/70Penetration-grade bitumen, mediumGeneral hot-mix paving, the most widely used grade
PEN 85/100Penetration-grade bitumen, softHot mix where a softer binder is called for
PEN 120/150Penetration-grade bitumen, softestSurface treatment binder and lighter-duty paving

For cold-applied surface work, Pro-Road also supplies bitumen emulsions for Bahamas.

SCHEDULE CONFIRMED WITH YOUR QUOTE

Penetration-grade bitumen ships in big bags of 1000 to 1300 kg, or in drums. The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.

Melting

How do you melt bitumen from big bags?

You melt bitumen by heating the whole bag in a melting unit.

  • A big bag holds 1000 to 1300 kg and is lifted by its four lifting loops.
  • A forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader handles the bag.
  • Bags are lifted level, one at a time.
  • No special decanting equipment is needed to move a bag from the container to the melter.

Cutting or shovelling solid binder off a pallet wastes time and damages the fabric of the bag. The bag is charged whole into the melting unit. Heat is applied indirectly, so the binder next to the wall does not scorch. Local overheating is what damages a binder, and controlled heating is what avoids it. The melted binder is then drawn off to the distributor or the plant. Pro-Road’s ASMELT bitumen melter and decanter is built for this process. The big-bag format loads straight into any melting unit you already run.

Applications

Which grade suits the Bahamas’ climate and traffic?

Hot climates and heavy traffic call for a harder grade such as PEN 60/70. PEN 85/100 or PEN 120/150 are available where a job calls for a softer binder. Your quote confirms the grade against your project specification.

The Bahamas is an archipelago, and Nassau on New Providence is the main gateway for imported construction materials. Big bags are stored on level, drained ground. They are kept off the surface on pallets or dunnage, and covered against prolonged sun and rain. Solid bitumen does not separate the way an emulsion does, so protecting the bag fabric is the storage priority. The Ministry of Works and Utilities is the Bahamas’ national road authority.

FAQ

What do buyers ask most about bitumen supply to the Bahamas?

Buyers most often ask about big-bag handling, melting and minimum order size.

How are big bags lifted and handled on site?

Big bags hold 1000 to 1300 kg and are lifted by their four lifting loops. A forklift, telehandler or crane with a spreader handles the load. Bags are lifted level, one at a time.

Can big bags be stored outdoors, and for how long?

Yes, big bags can be stored outdoors on level, drained ground. Keep them off the surface on pallets or dunnage, and covered against prolonged sun and rain. Solid bitumen does not separate the way an emulsion does.

How do we melt the bitumen?

You melt bitumen by heating the whole big bag in a melting unit. Heat is applied indirectly, so nobody cuts, breaks or shovels the solid binder. Controlled heating protects the binder from local overheating and damage.

What is the minimum order quantity?

The minimum order is 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.

Which penetration grade suits the Bahamas’ climate?

The Bahamas’ hot, humid climate calls for a harder grade such as PEN 60/70. Softer grades stay available for jobs that call for them, and your quote confirms the grade against your project specification.

What documentation ships with the container?

Each container ships with the grade’s datasheet, the commercial invoice, the packing list and the bill of lading. Datasheets are on our datasheets page.

How long does delivery to the Bahamas take?

Sea transit takes 18 days to Nassau Container Port. Your quote confirms the exact schedule and door-to-site timing.

Can we appoint our own inspector?

Yes. Pro-Road accepts third-party inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or a similar body at your request. The inspection is quoted and billed separately.

Do you supply cold mix asphalt for patching work?

Yes. Pro-Road produces cold mix for patching and road maintenance. Supply is in container volumes for contractors and municipalities. State your volume and destination port in your request.
