Product range

Which emulsion grades are available in Chile?

The grades available are conventional CRS and CSS types, polymer-modified versions, and Pro-Road’s own sealant lines. Each product is described in full on our bitumen emulsions page. Setting speed decides the use. Rapid grades break on contact and suit spray work. Slow grades stay workable for mixing.

GradeLineTypical use
CRS-1Conventional cationic, rapid settingBituminous seals and tack coat
CRS-2Conventional cationic, rapid settingBituminous seals where higher viscosity is needed
CSS-1Conventional cationic, slow settingFog seal in cold-climate zones and slurry seal
CSS-1hConventional cationic, slow settingFog seal in hot-climate zones and slurry seal
CRS-1m, CRS-2m, CSS-1hmPolymer-modified cationicHeavy traffic and demanding wearing courses
PRIM-18Modified liquid sealantChip seal (TSD) wearing surfaces
PRIS-74Conventional liquid sealantChip seal (TSD) wearing surfaces
PRP-98PrimerAdhesion coat before the first chip seal layer
PRSS-94Slow-setting slurry emulsionSlurry seal, supplied with mix design support

Chile shipments follow Pro-Road’s standard packaging, order size and storage terms:

  • Packaging. Emulsions ship in drums or IBC totes. Asphalt cement ships in drums or big bags.
  • Minimum order. Emulsions start at 16 MT, one full 20-foot container. Asphalt cement starts at 24 MT, one full 40-foot container.
  • Storage. Emulsions keep for one year in their original packaging. Store them in a cool dry place, in the shade, below 45 °C.

Applications

Which emulsion grades fit Chile’s road programmes?

The best fits are CRS grades for bituminous seals and tack coats. CSS grades suit fog seal and slurry work. Polymer-modified grades cover heavy-traffic corridors.

Chile’s Manual de Carreteras, published by the MOP’s Dirección de Vialidad, splits grade choice by climate zone:

  • Hot zones, including the Atacama Desert in the north, specify CSS-1h for fog seal work.
  • Cold zones, wetter toward the south, specify CSS-1 for fog seal work.

MOP has presented a 2025-2026 portfolio of 15 potential projects for tender through public-private concessions, worth USD 7,898 million. The ministry has also launched Plan Ruta Austral for the Carretera Austral. The programme invests more than CLP 800,000 million between 2026 and 2030.

Prime coat application before a chip seal on a prepared road base
Emulsion prime applied ahead of a chip seal wearing course.

Overlay work needs a tack coat between layers. CRS-1 or CSS-1h covers that step. Surface treatments and slurry seals extend road life between repaves. PRIM-18 and PRSS-94 are made for that work. Our chip seal guide explains the full double surface treatment method.

Emulsions also suit maintenance work across Chile’s varied climate. They apply cold and need no hot-mix plant on site.
